2025-12-31 - Miroku Information Services MS-G5 The MS-G5 might well be the rarest system I own. It's remarkable for a number of things. First, it's a rebranded Toshiba Pasopia 1600, itself not a tremendously successful system, although it did have a foot in the business market. Also, it was among the first machines on the Japanese market to have an architecture similar to IBM PC and compatibles. Indeed, it can load and process MS-DOS executables, but due to not having the same memory mapping for CGA or EGA, game titles are basically out. continued ⇒ |

2025-08-20 - Revisiting the Sharp MZ-80B (and more!) A while back, I found an incredibly good deal on a Sharp MZ-80B system and a host of extras. It included a dual floppy drive unit, as well as the corresponding expansion card so the computer could communicate with the drives, and a lot of floppy disks. What really struck me was how well taken care of this all was. Floppy disk collections this old in Japan almost always come bundled with at least some amount of mold, but the system, drives, and disks were all clean and working. continued ⇒ |

2025-07-30 - Hitachi Basic Master Mark 5 Finally, after about six years of collecting, I got a Hitachi Basic Master series computer. It has a massive footprint, designed to have the monitor placed on top of it. It came in its original box, and it was shipped to me in another box (which I am thankful for!), so in order to play with it, I had to prepare to have three Basic Master-sized items out at the same time, which is no easy task in my environment. But there's no denying, it's a gorgeous machine! continued ⇒ |

2025-07-21 - Boxed PC-8001 I recently picked up a complete-in-box PC-8001. It consisted of the computer, the instruction manuals, a compact BASIC reference pamphlet, monochrome video cable, CMT cable, system demo tape, and the manufacturer's warranty. It was all in great condition. continued ⇒ |

2025-04-16 - Sega SC-3000H I've had a couple of different SC-3000s, with specs varying by color only (originally I had black, now I have red). I recently grabbed an SC-3000H because a) it is a different color (white) and b) it was quite a reasonable price compared to others I'd seen. continued ⇒ |

2025-03-16 - SORD M5 CREATIVE COMPUTER I made an article about the Takara Game Pasokon a while back, but recently I came across the machine that the Game Pasokon is a clone of, the SORD m5. continued ⇒ |

2025-03-01 - NEC PC-98DO+ The PC-98DO+ sounds good on paper. It's distinguishing point is that it can run PC-9801 and PC-8801 software from a single computer. The DO purportedly stands for "dual operation" but I just call it "PC-98 do". You know, "do", like the word, "do". I was told this is wrong and was laughed at. I was also told that the machine is incompatible with a number of games on both the PC-88 and PC-98 side. continued ⇒ |

2024-12-01 - Tomy Pyuta mkII I picked up a Tomy Pyuta mkII on Mercari recently. This is a follow-up to the original Pyuta, similar to how the Commodore 64C followed the Commodore 64. Except while the Commodore 64C was a cost-saving implementation of the Commodore 64, this one looked like it provided a minor upgrade. From the outside, at a glance, it looks like they just swapped out the keyboard, offering a short-travel plastic keyboard, which was much more usable than the rubber chiclet keyboard that the original sported. continued ⇒ |

2024-10-23 - Sharp MZ-1500 Sharp is heavily represented in my collection, and for a couple of good reasons. They are divided into two groups: computer division (MZ series and the oddball PC-3100) and home electronics division (X1 and X68000), which I don't think happened at any other manufacturer. Another is that they're just so cool-looking. continued ⇒ |

2024-10-21 - Hitachi MB-H50 The Hitachi MB-H50 has a distinct look to it. It has a slim appearance and discrete ports. It has LEDs that react to audio levels. It has a detachable keyboard but it is not a desktop-style unit the way most MSX models with detachable keyboards are. In fact, the main unit has a console-style appearance. continued ⇒ |
