MULTI8 Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later; if a Japanese company made an 8-bit computer, I'm more than likely going to want to try it out. This time, I came across the Mitsubishi Multi8. It was far from a success, after the release of this, Mitsubishi chased the MSX market instead of continuing with their own unique 8-bit offerings. There was also a namesake successor, the Multi16, I don't know much about that one but it apparently wasn't compatible with the Multi8.

III I got this unique machine and thought it was absolutely gorgeous, but I wasn't able to do much with it. It came with a monitor and floppy drives, and when I powered it on it didn't display anything, and that left a lot of uncertainties. Was the monitor bad? I can't easily connect anything else to it. Was the computer bad? I can't easily connect another monitor to it. Were both the monitor and computer fine, but required the original boot disks before anything would be displayed? Good luck finding those. And for all of its lack of functionality, it was also huge.

I got this sort of hapless FP-1100 on Mercari. It came as a big set including monitor and manuals. The monitor was grimy but basically good condition and wiped up nicely. The computer itself, however, was a nasty mess and I did such a gosh-darned good job cleaning it up and I just NEVER think to take "before" pictures so I don't have any. Actually, I ALWAYS think to take before pictures and I ALWAYS think "nah, it won't be that interesting. But while this may not look perfect, believe me, it used to be much much worse. I did good by it. 続き⇒ |

2024年01月24日 - シャープPC-3100Sの修理! I got the PC-3100S quite a while ago and it *mostly* worked, it powered up into BASIC and you could throw direct commands at it and have it fire back at you, but something was wonky about the way it was storing program lines. You can check for more details about that in the main PC-3100S system article.

MZ-1200 The MZ-1200 is a continuation of the MZ-80K series, following the MZ-80K2E and preceding the MZ-700. A similar model was released in the western world as the MZ-80A. It has double the RAM (now 64KB) and a much more standard-looking keyboard. Interestingly, it's not necessarily a better keyboard. It still has the same problems that the MZ-80K2 has, no real number pad, and you have to type at a controlled pace or it will drop input.

2023年10月28日 - NEC PC-6601SR The PC-6601SR makes two major changes from the PC-6601 - it adds FM sound generation, and it comes as a desktop unit with detachable keyboard. Those are nice features, but I wasn't looking for a PC-6601SR, and if I were to have selected one, I would have preferred the red one, but we all know red is three times more expensive. I got this because it was part of a big lot. There was a lot of stuff not pictured here. A looot of stuff. It was pretty unbelievable, but I've let most of the other stuff go already. The system is a bit scratched up, and the plastic they used for the case is among the cheapest I've seen NEC use, but it does have some cool points to it, for sure. I was relieved as always to see it powered up and the floppy drive worked.

The Tomy Pyuta (released in the west as Tomy Tutor) is essentially a child's toy, but it offers a pretty distinct computing experience. For starters, it was a 16-bit computer. In 1982! In addition, it comes with a pretty good variety of games, although the controllers are awkward, and for a 16-bit system, the graphics feel underwhelming.

JR-100 The JR-100 is another product of the "incredibly compact and lightweight computer body but with an external PSU twice the weight of the computer" philosophy of computer manufacturing. The Sanyo PHC-25 still holds the title of actually most compact and lightweight computer in my collection.

VIC-1001 I had quite resolved not to get a VIC-1001 early on in my collection (back when I had a tame 10 or so computers). But recently I've sort of felt like, "maybe I'll just grab this one, fire it up, and photograph it for the blog" for a number of machines, so when I found this one at a not-terrible price on Mercari, I decided to grab it.

So I'll start by saying, this is a pretty interesting system! I don't think it's an excellent system, but it separates itself from being either a standard computer or a console pretty well. It is designed by a company with "real" computer roots - SORD - and is in fact an identical clone of the SORD M5, so the end result is, despite being essentially a toy, it has a much less cheap feel to it than its peers: the Sega SC-3000 and Tomy Pyuta.
