2023-12-29 - Sharp MZ-1200 The MZ-1200 is a continuation of the MZ-80K series, following the MZ-80K2E and preceding the MZ-700. A similar model was released in the western world as the MZ-80A. It has double the RAM (now 64KB) and a much more standard-looking keyboard. Interestingly, it's not necessarily a better keyboard. It still has the same problems that the MZ-80K2 has, no real number pad, and you have to type at a controlled pace or it will drop input. continued ⇒ |

2023-12-25 - Program Collection for PC-6001mkII For a year or two, I had the PC-6001mkII and didn't know that it supported 15 colors. I thought it was limited to 8, like most digital RGB-endowed PCs of the early 80s. One thing did seem kind of off... when I typed anything into the included word processing software, I couldn't see any characters. I guessed that it needed some sort of expansion to function properly. One game (game is used a bit loosely here) was very hard to see, but not impossible. I thought it was just poor color choice by the programmers. Maybe they work on monochrome monitors or something. continued ⇒ |

2023-11-18 - Joy Joy Pack Special Despite reading the description, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into with this purchase. It's a never-opened (until now) Joy Joy Pack #3 for the MZ-1500. It contains two QuickDisks with two main games, Drol and Shooting Wars. It also came with a board game, but the board game is based on Drol, and relies on loading side B of the Drol QuickDisk.The software on side B acts as the dice and also produces in-game messages. continued ⇒ |

2023-11-08 - FM Towns Marty Color Variation This is the second Marty article in this blog. I already blogged at greater length in the other article, but this is the Marty I prefer. The color is that of the earlier dark gray FM Towns systems. And the lighter gray one has a more modern design sense to it, and also the origin of the more modern style controller. continued ⇒ |

2023-10-28 - NEC PC-6601SR The PC-6601SR makes two major changes from the PC-6601 - it adds FM sound generation, and it comes as a desktop unit with detachable keyboard. Those are nice features, but I wasn't looking for a PC-6601SR, and if I were to have selected one, I would have preferred the red one, but we all know red is three times more expensive. I got this because it was part of a big lot. There was a lot of stuff not pictured here. A looot of stuff. It was pretty unbelievable, but I've let most of the other stuff go already. The system is a bit scratched up, and the plastic they used for the case is among the cheapest I've seen NEC use, but it does have some cool points to it, for sure. I was relieved as always to see it powered up and the floppy drive worked. continued ⇒ |

2023-10-25 - Aoi Uchu no Boken for MSX I found this kind of strange tape called Aoi Uchu no Boken (Adventure in Blue Outer-space) on Mercari. I saw some screenshots of it in via Google Images and thought it was pretty interesting looking. I decided to buy it. When it arrived, I noticed that it used to have two labels, but one was removed and placed directly on the tape case. Both labels have, in very hard-to-make-out writing, "SAMPLE" printed on them. The exposed side had a plain white label that said "DEMO MSX". I thought it was a game, but it was a non-interactive demo. continued ⇒ |

2023-10-21 - Tomy Pyuta The Tomy Pyuta (released in the west as Tomy Tutor) is essentially a child's toy, but it offers a pretty distinct computing experience. For starters, it was a 16-bit computer. In 1982! In addition, it comes with a pretty good variety of games, although the controllers are awkward, and for a 16-bit system, the graphics feel underwhelming. continued ⇒ |
