Mario Bros. Special has certainly made the rounds. I have had it on a half-dozen platforms easily, and I am aware of several others. It's a pretty fun game and it can kind of help understand a machine's graphical prowess. On the PC-8001mkII, it only uses four colors and the animation is a bit choppy, but that doesn't mean it's not fun. You start off in stage one by working your way up the gaps in the moving floor, activating all five levers (at the same time! they are on a timer and deactivate after about eight seconds), and then scurrying out the exit before the doors close. In later levels, they add the enemies to the mix even on this level, so it can get pretty manic. ![]() ![]() ![]() On stage two, you have to bounce on trampoline platforms with the enemies to cause them to turn over. If an enemy is stunned, you can knock them off, but if you jump on the platform again, they awaken and you're in danger. Later levels add new kinds of enemies. The sidesteppers (crabs) are not necessarily more dangerous or difficult than the shellcreepers (turtles) in this game, but the fighter flies (not pictured) add a challenge. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Stage three requires the collection of dollar signs. That part isn't so hard, but it can sometimes be a challenge to get up to the platform where they appear. The entrance to that platform is narrow and there can be fairly long stretches of bad timing where enemies are getting ready to drop through that same entrance when the elevator platform is in reach. ![]() ![]() Finally you get to stage 4 - the bonus stage. The first time through this stage is pretty easy. There are no enemies and you just have to collect the dollar signs before time runs out. Once you remember the pattern, you can do it pretty consistently. And if you can't, no real harm, it's just a bonus stage, you don't get the perfect bonus. You'll be okay. And most of that is true the second time you get to the bonus stage, too, but they introduce the moving platforms from stage 1, and it becomes quite difficult to get all the coins in time. ![]() ![]() This original box, game manual, and tape were in surprisingly good condition for their age. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
