Growing up in not-Japan, Dragon Quest was... well for one it was Dragon Warrior, and two, it was a NES game. That's why I was pretty surprised to find that it exists for MSX in Japan.

There is in fact an MSX version and an MSX2 version. Mine is the MSX2 version, though I have had both. The differences are a bit hard to pinpoint. I feel like the graphics are cleaner, but they don't appear to take advantage of the RGB on MSX2. I don't have an MSX2+, so no FM sound for me, but the game also doesn't say MSX2+. so I really doubt the re-orchestrated the sound to take advantage of the FM sound capabilities. It seems like it's just generically a bit better, but doesn't seem particularly worthy of a re-release. They could have done a lot more, in any event.

Still, it's recognizably Dragon Quest, it plays very much like the NES version of Dragon Warrior as I remember it from my early teen years, so it definitely hits the nostalgia buttons. The graphics and sound were more refined on the NES version, though.
