Super Shanghai is, as far as I can tell, unrelated to the other Shanghai games I have written about on this site. It's not released by System Soft or made by Activision. It's something of its own beast, but the basic game doesn't change. Pick two matching tiles (or anything else that qualifies as a pair) and try to clear the whole board. It's a nice version with relaxing background music and some tiles have special effects when you remove them. The graphics are pleasant, but compared to other games on this site, Super Shanghai is relatively new, so by this time it wasn't a big chore to make the tiles nice and tidy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As opposed to Shanghai II (by Activision/System Soft, which I have for PC-8801) which offered a variety of tile layouts, there is only one layout available in this game. However, there is a twist for those who long for variation in Shanghai. There is a different play mode called Dragon's Eye. You have a much more limited set of tiles to work with at any time, and you have to try to match them to uncover the "eye", in center of the board. The "master" puts out tiles trying to block the "slayer" from uncovering the eye. The slayer can play any matching tile from their hand, or if there is nothing to match, they can toss a tile onto the board in hopes that their replacement tile will be more useful. I think the eye consists of all six textured tiles on the board. You can choose to play as the master or the slayer, or you can play two players, which may be best because I'm sure the computer cheats! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
