Gate of Labyrinth is an RPG for the MZ-1500. Despite the MZ-1500 having read/write media, this game uses a password system rather than a save-to-disk system, so you know it's going to be a bit hobbled, but, well, Dempa Micomsoft is not known for its RPGs, and there may literally be no other RPG on the entire system, so let's cut it a little slack. It has standard but fun RPG elements, exploring large swaths of land, different terrain types, encountering different enemies, leveling up, hit points, stats, getting equipment, etc. I can get into this, for sure, although I think more unique and immersive RPGs exist on other systems. Musically, I can't speak to what is going on, but the music sounds more complex than most MZ-1500 games. I know the system comes with two sound chips for six voices, so maybe it's using both? Or maybe it's a simple matter of RPG-environment music having a tendency to sound more unique. In any event, the music is well worth a listen. I didn't notice when I took the picture, but it seems like I am trying to issue the "eat" command on the human. I am pretty sure you just eat food from your inventory, though! The box is a little rough, the paper artwork insert got stuck to the transparent plastic cover. It's pretty noticeable when you take the insert out of the box, but not so bad when you keep it inside, which is where it belongs anyway. But if I could, I'd like to get one in a bit better shape sometime. I got a second copy of this game, and didn't notice at the time, but it appears to be a color variation. The condition of the first game box isn't that great so while I can't really tell just by looking, I could be convinced that this is simply color bleed or other form of discoloration, but the back side seems totally a different color. Strange for what I have to imagine was a low-production game! It also came with a manual, a fairly thorough one compared to most MZ-1500 games. |
