The original version of Door Door was released on a lot of the early-80s 8-bit computers, and this mkII version came out around the mid-80s to offer a spruced-up version for the mid-80s 8-bit computers. I haven't played mkII on any other system besides the MZ-1500, but the graphics seem huge in comparison to the earlier version I've played on my PASOPIA7. As you can see in the intro screens, the programmers intended to kill the consumer with cuteness. It's another one in the series of games that straddles the line between action and puzzle. The game presents you with 100 levels to solve. To get through a level, lock aliens up inside the doors that you open. Although you can jump over enemies to make up for not knowing the method of solving the level, I think treating it like an action game is a fairly dead-end endeavor. The enemies pick up speed quickly if you don't solve the level efficiently. Speaking of jumping... the large size of the sprites make jumping over the enemies seem like a daunting task. I am pretty sure you can't jump over them without brushing over their heads, but the game is reasonably generous at judging your jump attempts. The box appears to be a papercraft replication of the main character and enemies, and the game is noteworthy for having the only custom-branded QuickDisk sleeve that I've come across so far. All the others have used Sharp-branded sleeves. |
