I used to play Shogun for the Commodore 64. It was unlike any other game I'd played before. You had to amass 20 followers and complete a small (but sometimes difficult and possibly sometimes impossible) quest from Buddha in order to be deemed worthy of becoming Shogun. How you got the followers was key. Sometimes you had to fight people and get them to submit to your will, sometimes you bribed them, sometimes you befriend them, and sometimes you boss them around and they sort of assume the stance that you are their leader. Some require a lot more work than others, but there are 39 other non-you characters so you could move on from a stubborn person.

This game existed in Japan, too, for MSX computers as well as Famicom.

The plot and objective are no different than described above. But the gameplay, mechanics, music, and art are completely different! It's like someone from Virgin (western version) and Dexter (Japanese version) met one night, agreed on some rough ideas for this game idea, and went their separate ways and made their own image of the game.

On the Commodore 64 version, you traversed in a sort of non-sensical manner, walking around on side-view screens, so you seem to be walking through the air much of the time. The MSX version is more of a Legend of Zelda type perspective, where you see your character walking across the land. And while the Commodore 64 version was overwhelmingly black, gray, and blue in color, the MSX uses a fuller palette. Commodore 64 made a lot of interesting background noises that varied depending on the scene, but the MSX version used some nice background music but with comparatively crude sound effects.
